HMV - online price Vs store price

Morning everyone! Hope you're not too frazzled by Christmas shopping - but being seasoned MSEs, you're probably not anyway!

I have a quick question about HMV's pricing policy. There's an item in my local store of which I need at least 4 copies (possibly 8) priced at £25, but on their website it's about £18. Quite a big difference, especially for multiple copies!

I think the site terms say something about website prices only being valid for online purchases - but does anyone know if the stores will match the price? If anyone has had the same experience I'd love to know.

I was also wondering whether to try bartering - maybe start at £20 each?! I've never tried this, and I probably won't be very good at it - but has anyone tried it (successfully) at HMV?

Anyway, thanks so much for any potential answers, and I'll speak to you soon.

Back to the fray...!

The stores won't match the website price. The reason the website is cheaper is because you don't have to pay VAT on the item because they are based in Jersey. They also sate this on their website.

All prices on hmv.com are for online purchases only and may differ from hmv Stores.

As others have stated they won't price match from store to website. And I don't think you'd get far bartering (worked at HMV few years ago), particularly as most staff right now would be temps-they probably wouldn't know what you are on about!

Don't forget though to check other web sites to see if its cheaper, you've not stated what the item is but http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/ is good for getting dvd prices.
Out of my mind. Back in 5 minutes.

They don't have to pay VAT, am I the only one that realises £7 is not 17.5% of £18, I'd also put it down to lower overhead costs meaning they can supply things cheaper online without renting stores, paying so many staff and various other costs associated with keeping a shop open

You can also buy online via Quidco for extra cashback.

"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
  • I had a similar problem with HMV a couple of years back. I saw an album online for a certain price and when I walked into the store it was quite a few pounds more. When I asked why this was they claimed overheads, but I think thats rubbish, since its still HMV paying for overheads whether you're buying in-store or online.

Anyway, as others have said there's not much you can do about it unfortunately.

I hate the way companies do this. I wanted the Godfather trilogy, online it was £9.99 , in the shop it was £25. I ended up buying it online for £8.95 (I used a 10% off code)

So what's the problem? It's common sense that items bought online are going to be a lot cheaper than instore.

Its worse when thier own HMV Vouchers dont work online! This IS the 21srtcentury is isnt it??!!! ; )
  • I have now ordered twice from HMV.COM and they have failed to dispatch within 2 weeks - this is despite a lack of stock availability confirmed on the website at the point of order. I would not recommend anyone use this website.

They may be cheaper than the store, but will you receive the goods in a reasonable period of time? Not in my experience on two seperate occasions.

There are far superior on-line retailers.

    Good luck.

I've always had all my orders from HMV dispatched within 2 days. And then they normally arrive 2-3 days afterwards. About the same time Play.com takes.
