What colour should I paint my walls?

I live in a small house in the UK which currently has all white walls everywhere. I'm thinking of adding some colour to some of my walls; my bedroom. I'm thinking about whether to paint just the wall behind my bed like an accent colour or the whole room. If I go for just the one wall, would a like neutral colour like a stone colour like this look odd? What other light colours would you suggest would go if I wanted an accent wall behind the bed with the rest of the white walls/curtains/fitted wardrobe/walnut furniture?? I'm thinking of avoiding too dark colours.

Also, how does the quality compare between the likes of Dulux and independent brands such as Farrow & Ball and Little Greene?

  • Only you can answer the colour question. Personally I hate white and would prefer even magnolia. I like warm colours but everyone is different.

Valspar, Dulux and Johnstone's are all good paints. No need to pay silly F&B prices.

    1. Choose a colour that you like.
    2. Choose one that matches some furnishing in the room.
F&B etc are trends. If you like what they offer then go for it as there are some unusual tints. They tend to be best in homes with some age or history but that also depends on how you are furnishing your place.
You should do it for you. If trends makes you feel good, if you just love black and white whatever make it your own.
It's been pure chance for me so far with decorating during lockdown with paint and furnishings not available. I'm reckoning that my house is like walking into an ice cream as it's neutral - but the colour is in furnishing at the mo and it shows off my collection of original art works too.
So yes, definitely like a gelato stand. But it's bright light and cheerful.

I think white is great for a clean modern look, but I prefer pastel colours.

We prefer deep, saturated colours with a chalky, matt finish and have used F&B and Little Greene throughout both our current (400 year old) and several previous (also pretty ancient 😉) houses.

I find the coverage and the sheer depth of colour of these (particularly LG) to be far superior to other, less expensive paints, particularly Johnstone's which we've used on some ceilings here and is really watery/thin 🙁

Colour-wise, choose whatever makes you happy, OP 😁

If the rooms are small, don't go for dark colours or the rooms will feel even smaller.

Unless you have clean white coving, in which case they will look very smart :D

Just register the pics - it's a perfectly nice room with an en-suite, are you renting? If so, why not just leave it as is and save your money for another treat?

Thanks for all the replies. I understand the colour is a personal preference. Just wondering what light colours would go if I wanted an accent wall behind the bed with the rest of the white walls/curtains/fitted wardrobe/walnut furniture?

It's a newish new-build. The idea of using an independent paint is for a better finish/quality paint to be honest.

Thanks. I'm not renting. It's a new build. The extra door is storage. :)

You don't want ascent colours, that will have you climbing the walls; did you mean accent?

What about painting every room in pink. If you're a bloke it'll put you in touch with your feminine side.
