Student insurance for holidays only

My son is a named driver on my insurance which bumped the premium up about £1000 .

He is now off to uni without the car, so won't be using it for 2/3 of the year.

I got a quote from an insurer who insure for short durations (from 1hr to weeks), hoping it would be cheaper over the course of a year.

Their quote (Jaust) was £500 for one month.

There should be a market for insuring students just during holidays, saving over the full year cost.

Anyone come across such a product/company...?

TIA

  • If you Google for "day insurance", you'll find dozens of companies offer just such a product.  Here's one, just by way of example - I'm not particularly recommending them as such, it's just an example : https://www.comparethemarket.com/car-insurance/temporary-car-insurance/

That's what "Jaust" is, but they would charge £500 for a month, compared to that paying £1000 per year is attractive, even if the insurance isn't being used for most of the time.

I was hoping there'd be a better solution

Have you spoken to your insurers about the cost of adding him as a Temporary Additional Driver? Some have a time limit of what they consider "temporary" so worth checking that too.

I discussed short term insurance with my kids. They were saying that if you had to pay £50 insurance before popping to their friends house they just wouldn't go there. The circumstances in which they drove would be much more limited so they would hardly ever use it. After passing their test I just wanted them to be able to freely use a car when they came home.

Being young, being a student and only driving occasionally will all stack up to increase the price.

To conclude this thread we found with our current insurer (Churchill) we can add and remove son as named driver for no admin fee if we do it ourselves on line, and the cost is pro-rata of the yearly cost, so just what we were looking for !
