Unable to have a smart meter - so unable to get a good tariff (previously posted in LPG etc)
Hi all
I was moved to Scottish Power after the collapse of Yorkshire Energy, and I have been looking for the best fix to move to ASAP. As those plans all seem to require a smart meter, I arranged for Scottish to get one fitted so that I could then move away to another company. The engineer from a firm called Providor came today, and after viewing the current set up explained that he could not do the work as the power feed into the meter does not have a fuse - he said that none of the ones he saw in the cupboard had fuses. He said that Western Power would have to switch off the whole block (48 flats with two lifts) so as to fit fuses. Interestingly, he did see that Eon had managed to fit a smart meter for one of the flats, and said that he could only think that the Eon engineer had done the work with the system 'live'.
So my problem is that I will not be able to get the EDF 2 year fix, certainly before rates change. Does anyone have advice on how best to progress this? Is there a way for company like EDF to set aside its 'smart meter only' rule in such a circumstance? I'd be happy to hear any comments or advice from any of you.
I am on Economy 7 in Birmingham.

Sign up for the tariff that you want and agree that the supplier can fit a smart meter. If it turns out that a smart meter cannot be fitted, the supplier will normally let you remain on your chosen tariff.0

According to the EDF T&Cs (check and you will see), you will still be eligible for the SM tariffs if a smart meter is unable to be fitted. So sign up, arrange an installation appointment and they'll put it down as an aborted installation, and then you will be able to stay on the smart meter only tariff.
