Three to introduce £2/day European roaming charges from May 2022

  • so it seems Three customers will not be able to avoid this by staying on their contract - and will be put onto a NEW contract with the new fees - which isn't what the MSE article says.
Who is best for roaming these days?
Where are you seeing this please? What Three had said was "pay as you go customers and customers who have taken out a contract before 1 October 2021 are unaffected by these changes."
The link in the opening post states:

"Most existing Three pay-monthly or Sim-only customers (barring those on an Essentials plan who want to use their allowance in certain destinations outside of Europe) won't face the new roaming charges if they simply do nothing. It's only those who sign up to a new Three deal or renew their contract on or from Friday 1 October who may have to pay.  "

I assume the bit in bold has turned out to be incorrect?

Three will let you keep roaming for the remainder of your plan, and of course if you do nothing at the end of the plan then it will continue on a rolling monthly basis.

However looking on the Mobile Phones board it appears that as people reach the end of their contracts, Three are starting to tell people the plan is no longer available and they need to choose a new one.  Which they are allowed to do.

eSIMs are the way forward... Next time you buy a new phone, if you can, get a dual SIM model if you don't have one already. Usually one SIM is for a conventional card, and the other is a virtual SIM card (ie there is no actual card). Use the SIM card for your UK provider as normal. The eSIM allows you to buy data online from virtually any country in the world, all done over the internet with no actual SIM card required. The prices are similar to local data where you travel and for Europe, far less than £2 a day. It's huge leap forward for travellers. It saves a small fortune, and removes the hassle of buying local SIM cards where you travel. As you travel your UK number is still active for calls and texts etc from home and the eSIM provides for your data needs. eSIM regional and global data is also available for very reasonable prices for those who are country-hopping (although sadly not much of that is happening any more). Airalo is an example, and there are many other providers.
