Easing/Lubricating UPVC Windows and Doors

Just wondering what others do.

I'm find my (approx. 12 year old) windows are oddly very stiff to open/close.

I'm using WD40 Silicon spray for joints/sliding parts and hinges. I find that there isn't much of an immediate improvement but then, a couple of days later, things seem a bit better. Not amazing though.

Is this the best approach? Something better to use on window sliding parts? Perhaps a light oil would be better for hinges?

I'm checking for gunge and obstructions and give things a good clean and wipe before I lubricate but there's nothing obviously hindering movement

I must admit that I'm no real WD40 lover (the ordinary WD40 that is) - it seems to be good at cleaning and initial easing but I feel that there is less long term lubrication. Perhaps the silicon version is better?

Any opinions?

    WD40 is only temporary.

Light machine oil such as 3 in 1 is my go to for such jobs.

Also a chance that the wheels on the runners are just plain knackered and need replacing

Sliders on doors often have screws to control friction

I had a chap come and adjust a composite door under warranty where it was sticking. He advised to use silicon spray regularly on all moving parts of window and door locks. Better than WD40 in terms of not staining, and a better smell also.  His recommended product was Turtle Wax Cockpit Shine for cars, which works well and smells nice to boot!

    Thanks everyone.

My windows don't have 'wheels on the runners'. The metal plates connecting the windows to the frame terminate on little plastic pieces that slide along a metal channel. I've just checked one that I used WD40 Silicon spray on a few months ago and it seems absolutely dry to me.

I'm thinking now that something oilier (3 in 1 as suggested), would be better. Can't hurt to try.

I've used the WD40 Silicon spray on my windows and they've been much better since it was applied well over a year ago.

    Silicon spray every time here.
  • silicone spray should do . Also on the hinges . there is a small plastic lug with a very small slotted screw head. this releases the tightness of the hinges . don't do them too slack as they can blow open in a wind or slide open too far if a top hung sash . have a nose for them

When you have sprayed them, you need to open/close the window several times straight after you sprayed them .
A thankyou is payment enough .
