i have left British Gas after a 2 year nightmare with billing, overcharges and faulty smart meters.
I received a cheque to close the account.

2 weeks later I receive a bill. They tell me they miscalculated and I quote “we all make mistakes” .

I thought a final settlement final- I have wasted so much time over 2 years chasing them I do not feel I should pay them more money

Any thoughts ?

If you owe the money then you owe the money. Have you checked their calculations are (now) correct?

You could ask them for a small discount for inconvenience, but you're only entitled to your provable losses. 
If you owe them money, you owe them money regardless.

As above.  Check the readings and calculations.  They're entitled to correct a mistake and you're obliged to pay for what you've consumed.  If you do owe the money, they'll chase it, which could cost you more time and effort on top of the £159.
