Their representatives tend to be unqualified, but they are usually well trained in the narrow field of writing a will using a particular set of templates. If the will is straightforward, there's little to go wrong, as all the reps have to do is fill in a few blank fields on a computer screen.
If your friend's affairs are at all complicated, or tax mitigation is important, it would make sense to get the will drawn up by a solicitor who is a member of https://www.step.org/
Incidentally, Pattison James has very good reviews on Trustpilot and Google. Of course, it's in the nature of the game that any errors only emerge years after the will is written, and the people leaving the reviews are not really qualified to know whether the will has been soundly drawn up. Still, it's a good sign.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2 -
They may be very good, but I would never make a will with an unregulated firm.1

Do please be very careful that the Will writers do not suggest that they could act as Trustees or Executors of your estate. Also make your own arrangements for Will Storage as many Will Writers that are no longer in business may have stored Wills and the owners can no longer find their Wills,I'm a retired IFA who specialised for many years in Inheritance Tax, Wills and Trusts. I cannot offer advice now, but my comments here and on Legal Beagles as Sam101 are just meant to be helpful. Do ask questions from the Members who are here to help.2
