GNE to EDF Sudden Direct Debit Hike
This might be a useful word of advice for other former Green Network Energy customers like me who got moved to EDF after its collapse. Given how long there was between GNE failing and my EDF account coming online (I was unable to submit meter readings between February and June/July essentially) it seems that GNE really low-balled my energy usage in the coldest part of the year so EDF have assumed I've massively upped my usage since they took over in April to leave me with a £400 bill between April and September.
As a result my £44 DD went to £136 per month.
I doubt I'm the only transfer who'll suffer from this so it might be worth checking/prepping for.

Just to add I did some maths and basically despite the prior two years seeing an average 12kWh per day usage during the period between December and April GNE's "estimated usage" given to EDF was only 8kWh per day...0

So you hadn't given GNE meter reads for December and January - or for Feb and March for that matter.
12kWh a day @15p plus VAT is about £60 a month ; so you were underpaying GNE at £44. There would have been a considerable debt when Edf took over. The underestimate of consumption may have made it worst.
Did you keep the GNE going or did you cancel it ? In my transfer Edf missed out taking a DD in April - did they do the same with you ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
I see you just skipped reading just about all of the comment such as where I said I was unable to give readings for several months because of GNE's collapse (their app not working combined with EDF taking months to set up accounts). And yes, I know I was underpaying because GNE screwed up the estimate. That's literally the point I was making...Robin9 said:So you hadn't given GNE meter reads for December and January - or for Feb and March for that matter.

Why bother to leave a comment if you had nothing useful to add...0 -
Further update.
I've managed to get EDF to put in a conflict notice on the final bill so that hopefully while I'll have to pay GNEs administrators a corrected bill it'll mean my DD comes back down.
The person I spoke to funnily enough mentioned that I wasn't the first person that day with that exact problem and that EDF are reportedly having to set up a specialised unit to deal with the fallout from this. Might be regretting taking on GNE's customers even more now.0 -
I did read all your post - GNE site for meter reading was open until end of March- so there should be no reason for GNE to underestimate.
Do you agree that at £44 you had been underpaying what should have been £60 DD ?

To support Robin9's claim, if you look in this post you'll see my final GNE bill / EDF opening bill. I was able to leave meter readings on GNE's website via my account on 31st Jan, 21st Mar and 17th Apr.Robin9 said:I did read all your post - GNE site for meter reading was open until end of March- so there should be no reason for GNE to underestimate.

Well I don't know why it didn't want to cooperate for me. I mostly used the app version and that was spotty even before it went under at times.QrizB said:

Except they still did. And even working off of estimates it's rather odd for them to have two years worth of data for that same period and then instead assume it'd be a third of what it had been.Robin9 said:I did read all your post - GNE site for meter reading was open until end of March- so there should be no reason for GNE to underestimate.

And no, paying £44 a month isn't necessarily "underpaying" if it's averaged over the year.0 -
I've had my final GE bill today and had a small heart attack. I only joined them in Dec/Jan, £600 bill till the end of April! Never paid this much for energy.0

The basics before the heart attack. Is this based on estimated readings ? Are the opening readings the one you gave GNE in Dec/Jan ?Giddypip said:I've had my final GE bill today and had a small heart attack. I only joined them in Dec/Jan, £600 bill till the end of April!
