Refused renewal of car insurance

Options
Hi, so Hastings direct refused to renew my car insurance but won't tell me the reason why just saying the underwriters made the decision not to renew. So will I have to click yes to the following question have I ever had car insurance refused or cancelled to future car insurers ? Thanks in advance.

Yes you tell the truth on insurance  otherwise it may be invalid  .
Not at all sure what the poll is about .

This is normally considered a "declined to quote" however were you explicitly asked the question you've presented (which isnt the normal question) you'd then have to admit to it.

no you don't as it's a decline to quote rather than a refusal.  Its no different to going on a comparison site and having a dozen or so at the bottom refusing to offer terms.

I'd been with them good few years I'm just guessing it was due to moving house and changing vehicle same week but they can't tell me the actual reason why. Thought it would go against me thankyou

No I've been with them good few years but moved house and vehicle but they wouldn't give me the reason to refuse renewal. So wasn't sure if to put yes or no on future insurers
  • Unless they ask if anyone has declined to quote, which would be odd, then no.

Any time you use a comparison site a bunch of companies decline to quote, it's perfectly normal.

This is what Go Compare has to say about renewal refusal -

    https://www.gocompare.com/car-insurance/guide/declarations-and-non-disclosures/

    (Scroll down to 'Refuse Insurance')

According to them you do have to declare refusal of renewal when you apply for car insurance.

Reasons for refusing renewals don't normally include moving house and changing vehicle the same week, though.

I'd definitely want to find out why they are refusing to quote just in case they have incorrect information on their files. After all you have been a loyal customer for a good few years. You could contact the Financial Ombudsman for help, if Hastings Direct definitely will not disclose any reason.  https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/consumers/how-to-complain

(That makes me cross because I'm currently insured with them and I really don't like the fact that they are refusing renewals without any explanation!)

All motor insurance companies in the UK have to, by law, disclose details of everyone who is insured with them and they are then placed on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) - so if you should have disclosed a renewal refusal but didn't, there's a possibility that it could be on the database and you'll be challenged when you apply to get insurance elsewhere.

MIB won’t include refusal to renew. CUE and other databases can.

Most refusals to renew have little to do with the insured individually and more to do with a change in strategy
