Pay as you go meters

Just purchased a house and whilst we are in the process of moving our energy over we have found out that the property is on pay as you go meters and there is showing as debt on the meters.

Is it down to me or my utility company to contact them to zero the meter if there is any debt on them, I am assuming there will be.

They will be getting swapped over to direct debit as I have always had direct debit for my utilities having pay as you go seems alien to me.

Have you registered with the current incumbent supplier of the property ?  You cannot move to your preferred supplier until you do.  The incumbent supplier will sort out the debt situation.  Getting moved off the pre pay meter could be more difficult than you hope.
  • Nope - TBH I didnt think I needed to do that as I've never done it in any of the properties that I have lived in before.
I have always just swapped my provider over.
