Nintendo switch question

Hi, I've bought a Nintendo Switch, this is the first console I've owned in almost 20 years; do I need to buy a memory card to save my progress on games? If so, is there a particular one people would recommend?

  • Short answer is no, it already has 32GB of internal flash memory for game progress. In fact I believe games won't save progress to the external memory card to prevent cheating.

If you mostly buy cartridge games then the 32GB will suffice but if you buy and download digital games, you may find the internal 32GB a bit restrictive, some games are as much as 10GB.

If you do need to expand in the future, then I'd recommend a Sandisk card rated with UHS-I support, and a minimum ‘read speed’ of 60-95mb/s or better.

There are tales of fake SD cards being sold so just be careful about getting one from a reputable source, preferably in full retail packaging - I actually buy all mine in store from Tesco / Asda / Currys rather than online to reduce this risk.
  • I stuck a 512GB memory card in mine as I planned to download most of my games, however the issue I have found is that physical games are usually discounted to less than half of RRP, where as Nintendo Store games rarely get discounted at all so I think I only have one digital game vs 7 physical games. Which is the complete reversal of my PC, PS4 and PS5 where I have not bought a physical game in many years.

As for saving your progress, nope, that is saved on the console's internal memory.
