Best value wet kitten food

We have recently rescued a kitten, and it seems that the only wet food I can find is in pouches at that work out at about 35-50p each. As our kitten is getting through at least 3 a day, I was wondering of there is a more affordable way of buying food. Why does it not come in cans any more, the pouches cannot be recycled and it is difficult to get all of the tiny amount of food out very easily. Has anybody come across larger pouches, or cans? Is there a cheaper way to feed my kitten?

Thanks very much!

  • I've only ever fed one on kitten food, he helped himself to the adult food put down for my others and I never purchased it again.

There's an issue with packaging for pet food, resulting in shortages. However, I've also noticed there's been less and less tins over the years. At the moment it's a case of grabbing what's available when shopping.

Generally it's 85g packets for cats, some are smaller. There's no large packets, which doesn't make sense when people do have more than one cat. Use a knife to get all the food, gravy, jelly out.

The packets can be recycled, look online to see where your local tetrapak recycling point is.

I pick my food up from Tesco, Aldi and Pet's at Home.

If you're happy ordering online there are some good companies.

Similarly, my cats never had kitten specific food.

The supermarket own brands are similar in terms of nutritional quality as the felix/whiskas type food and much cheaper. All of them are pretty rubbish for cats, lots of vets equate them to McDonald's.

For more protein rich/grain and sugar free food, online is definitely cheapest, there's many brands usually from Europe (and in tins up to 800g!) that are much better quality, at around £1 per 400g tin (Bozita, smilla, mjamjam, feringa etc). Cheaper than what you're currently buying, better for the environment and better for your kitten!

Lots of people in the mainland UK like zooplus.co.uk, I find their shipping to Northern Ireland incredibly slow.
