Private reg removal V778 inspection for old vehicle - can it fail the inspection?

OR, borrow a battery from another vehicle for a day.1

If they want to inspect the vehicle, you will have to transport it to a test station, they aren't going to come to your house, you can always "borrow" the battery off your car or something if it needs to be started. When I put the 'plate off my old 'bike on retention (it had been on SORN for 3 years IIRC), I got it MOT'd first, as I reckon as others have said, that the DVLA simply want to know the vehicle exists, and an MOT provides a VIN check for them.It worked as I got to do the retention online with no problemI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science

Good point, they'll presumably expect it to drive into the testing bay under it's own power.
So even trailering it to them won't be sufficient. You'd be best trying to get a cheap battery from somewhere, if you're friendly with a local garage they'll probably have something kicking about that'll last a day.
How much work would it be to get it to pass an MOT? I don't think there's anything in there about not having to jump start it. If it's got an MOT then you can just transfer it and then scrap it

No it's not. I hadn't considered a second hand one.AdrianC said:So this plate is worth less to you than the price of a second-hand battery?0 -
It would cost at least £1500 in welding alone to pass an MOT. That's the reason I'm scrapping it - simply no point in paying £1500+ each year to keep it on the roadHerzlos said:How much work would it be to get it to pass an MOT?

According to online quotes, somewhere between £300 and £800 for reselling the plate - its a 5 digit with acronym, so it all depends on how desirable is that acronym. So it's certainly not worth paying for MOT. But having found myself out of work due to the pandemic and on pitiful UC, I can't even afford to lose the £80 for plate retention if DVLA insist on inspection and the van can't get to an inspection. I'm in a quandary to be sure. I need to recover any value from the van that I can and I can't afford to lose a penny. This is why I've been so anxious to find out all about the inspection process, to see what I may have to face and then base any decisions on the advice of people who have experience of this.AdrianC said:How much is this plate worth to you?0 -
It doesn't say it needs an MOT , only be of a type that needs one.
be taxed currently (or have a SORN in place
If it has a SORN in place it could not be driven to a test centre. The vehicle must:
- be registered with DVLA in the UK
- be able to move under its own power
- be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate
- have been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years
- be taxed currently (or have a SORN in place - if it’s had a SORN for more than 5 years, it must be taxed)
- be available for inspection

I have certainly trailered a number of vehicles to DVLA to be inspected .But that was a few years ago and rules do change and the DVLA are a smaller organization now .DVLA basic check engine and VIn numbers and a quick look to see its not a cut and shut .1
