East Midlands Airport (EMA) is launching a competition to name its new fire engines.

The four Scania Angloco 8750 vehicles have replaced the airport's ageing fleet of fire engines before the ongoing cost of maintenance made it unaffordable to operate them.

The competition is for children aged up to 12-years-old. The most creative, fun and imaginative names for the vehicles will be selected by the airport’s firefighting teams. The lucky winners will be invited to a naming ceremony at the airport and will have the opportunity to see the fire engines in action.

How to enter the competition:

  • The competition opens on Monday 16 August and runs until Friday 3 September.
  • Suggestions for fire engine names should be emailed to pressoffice@eastmidlandsairport.com (the person entering the competition should include their name and age).
  • In the subject box of the email please type ‘fire engine name competition’

Facts about East Midlands Airport’s new fire engines:

  • Make/model: Angloco 8750
  • Water tank size: 8000 litres
  • Foam tank: 600 litres
  • Chassis and cab: Scania
  • Seats: 4 people
  • Hose reel: 70m length
  • Water pump: 4,500 litres per minute

About the fire firefighting operation at EMA

  • All airports have firefighting teams based on the airfield. This is a necessary requirement as, without them, aircraft cannot land or take off.
  • As EMA is one of the UK’s few airports to operate flights 24-hours a day, seven days a week, a team of firefighters, or ‘Watch’, is on permanent duty at the airport.
  • EMA has 48 firefighters who split their time between four ‘Watches’ with each Watch working a shift of 12 hours before being replaced by a new Watch.
  • The position of the ‘airside’ fire station is critical. The team needs to be within three minutes reach of any part of the airfield.
