Bank Account for someone with Autism/Special Needs

Options
I need a bank account for my 19 year old son, where he can have an account with card but CANNOT go overdrawn.

He needs an account where an amount of money can be deposited and then that is all he can spend and no further.

My son is Autistic/ADHD, very able to use a bank card but doesn’t understand the seriousness of not spending over your means.  He needs to be able to have his own bank card so that he can learn to take some responsibility, learn a bit of independence but in a safe way.

I have tried several banks and they can’t facilitate this type of account.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Have you asked about basic bank accounts - that would seem to meet his needs.
He can do direct debits and standing orders, and have a cash or debit card but he cannot go overdrawn with it.
Most of the main banks do those.  List here.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • He needs a basic account, I know that halifax do one this is why my daughter has an account with them (she's 10) in a few years she will need a card but there is a really basic account that she cant overdraw on, she is ASD too so I echo your fears.

My son has a Barclays basic account. You can have a contactless one or just  a card that you get money out of ATM. You can only spend what you put in No overdraft. I put money in by standing order. You can pay direct debts and standing orders, but of course you need to have enough money in. But it learns them to manage . I forgot to say he uses an app on his phone so he can see his account.

No Bank or Building Society will give you what you seek.

All payments cards can allow an account to slightly overdraw in some circumstances e.g.technical failure or offline usage. If they made the blanket guarantee you are seeking, then they would need absorb any losses without any comeback.

The best you can expect for an adult account is no authorised overdraft and an online debit card.

Lloyds and NatWest offer cards for saving accounts. They can be used at their ATMs only and there is no way it can go overdrawn.

  • Nationwide do a basic account and I was never able to go overdrawn when I had the account. Also it offers all the same capabilities of a normal account. You have online banking facility so you could purchase have the app and monitor his account, put money on etc.

So not payment cards, and not what the OP wants.
