Selling "paper" share certificates

Hi all,
I have some old share certificates (ie the original paper certificates). HL have suspended their service for paper shares, just wondering if anybody could recommend and alternative company through which I could sell them?
..many thanks for any replies...

Are they still not accepting transferred in certificates?
After 18+ months into the pandemic, it's really about time HL management got their act together and started giving the service their clients pay top-dollar for.

Not easy to provide a top $ service when staff members are constantly going AWOL.  Applys across the board. Including the NHS.

HL's problems have been two-fold:  1) Covid, and 2) a big influx of new, smaller investors that they've prioritised over providing normal services for existing customers. The impact on the NHS was more direct.

NHS is staff related. Children cannot remain at home unattended while suffering from Covid. My friend who is a head of a large maternity unit. Says that staff absence is now causing a major issue given many are also on summer leave as well .

This worked for me. It was very easy and cost £5.95 (ish) to sell my shares. It was fairly long winded as I needed some paper work witnessed.
I tried with a small holding first just to see how it panned out.

  • I agree that x-o (Jarvis) are worth looking at. Whoever you use, it's usually best to take two steps - transfer the paper certificates to electronic form then, when that's completed, sell them - rather than try to do both at once.

Similar situation.  I want to sell a small value of shares for which I have certificates, which HL won't accept. What I don't understand is that the shares are held by another Registrar (Platform?) whose selling fees are high, amounting in this case to around 30% of the share value! As I have the paper certificates, can I sell direct via any broker such as X-O, or am I bound to sell via the Registrars?

Me too. But my shares are in Vectura, so I was hoping for a buy-out and a cheque in the post.

You can sell via an account with an online broker but you will need to get the paper shares transferred to the CREST electronic form first.
    e.g. from the X-0 website...

How do I transfer in stock that I hold in the form of certificates?

X-O is a nominee based account. If you have share certificates, you can transfer them to your account by clicking here to download a Crest Transfer form. You need to complete a transfer form for each holding and then return to us at: X-O.co.uk, Jarvis Investment Management Ltd, 78 Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 8BS together with your valid share certificates (these must be in your name).

    • "Name of Undertaking" - The company name (i.e. Barclays or Vodafone).
    • "Description of Security" - Security description (i.e. ORD GBP1 or ORD USD0.10).
    • "Words" - Number of shares in words.
    • "Figures" - Number of shares in figures.
    • "In the name(s) of" - Please enter your full name and address, exactly as it appears on your certificate.

You can leave the rest of the form as it is and we will take care of the rest. Remember to return your certificate with the transfer form.
