Vacuum cleaner recommendation

I would be interested in vacuum cleaner recommendations please.

I live in a 2 up, 2 down house, half carpet/half hard floor with a long haired teen and short haired cat. I would like something which is easy to whip around on a daily basis, that can also manage stairs and awkward spaces with ease.

I am interested in the MSE offer of Shark cordless vacuum cleaners which is the top end of my budget but would happily buy something different if it does what I need. I don't necessarily need cordless, all types considered. Happy to have a corded model if they work better.

Thanks in advance.

We had a Vax cordless that was great until the wheels all snapped off.  The really good thing was that it had 2 batteries so you could always have one charging.

We now have a Shark cordless that is quite good, nice and lightweight and (like the Vax) can be used as a handheld so easy for stairs, ceilings etc.  But only one battery and the OH is convinced that it must be run till it dies before recharging which means it just switches itself off when you're in the middle of doing a room.

fyi - 3 adults of varying lengths of hair and a short haired cat that moults non stop.  (a very thick under coat leaves fluff everywhere)

  • We used to have a Dyson cordless, recently replaced it with a Shark cordless (the pet hair/anti hair wrap one) which is MILES better. It has different settings for carpet and hard flooring as well, which is handy.
  • I've gone through 3 sharks - Utterly rubbish
Donated my hetty to someone who had nothing but she was a good hoover.

Now I have a Miele pet vacuum which beats the sharks hands down, doesn't lose suction etc, Yes it has bags but they are fairly cheap on planet bezos.

3 Women all long hair, one bald husband and one dog who doesn't shed but has hair loss like we do.

No issues with our Vax Airlift.  Being able to lift the motor and container off the wheels to do stairs is a bonus.

Still about £120, but advertised occasionally at less than £100.

We have a GTech Air Ram and I would recommend it.

  • Corded Shark, absolutely love it. It has a really long cable and the ‘lift away’ but makes it easy to do stairs.

Another vote for this one. We are very happy with ours.

Miele if you want something that will last a lifetime and work a charm.
  • A quick tip if you're looking for a cordless vac - get a couple of extra filters for it from eBay (much cheaper than official ones) so you have always got a spare whilst one is drying after being washed.

This applies to corded vacuums as well but you don't need to wash the filters as often on them as they have so much more suction to start with.
