I have noticed this bank is offering one of the top rates for 2/3 year fixed rate bonds
Not heard of them & wondering how they can offer such good rates ? Is the money really just held in a bank account not investment related(stocks& shares)?

They historically offered financial products to various workers the public sector eg NHS, teachers. So their established customer base is huge, but if you're not part of it you might not have heard of Wesleyan before.1

You can go back to first principles and validate the status of an institution that you haven't heard of via the FCA register and so on, and carefully study the small print on the provider's website, etc.
However, the best buy savings listings on reputable sites like this one (no sniggering at the back please!) are generally trustworthy enough to rely on for the quoted FSCS status, so as they're shown there, that'll be good enough for most:

Have had an account in the past and they were great. Only transferred elsewhere because needed monthly interest and they didn't offer it0
