My elderly fathers roofing problem - grants?

Dear MSE forum members,

My father (who is now in his 80s) has problem with his roof again, he lives in a small 70s bungalow. He has claimed on his buildings insurance a few times, each time they pay to patch it up. It looks like what is really needed is a new roof, as it may happen again.

I wondered are there any grants available for pensioners for roof replacement? Specifically in the Brentwood Essex area.

I have no idea where to look, I see some pages that local roofers might be able to advise, but he has already been let down by one tradesman for a repair this weekend.

many thanks,
Joe

Some councils can provide grants/loans for certain home improvements, but I doubt if a new roof would be covered. It might be that the council would provide a loan secured against the property - Have a chat with Adult Social Services and your local Age UK.

Some councils do... perhaps it's a Scotland only thing but it's certainly worth exploring.  In Glasgow re-roofing grants up to 50% of the cost are given to specific buildings.

No harm in asking the council's housing department, the worst answer is 'no'.
