Apprenticeship and grandparents Universal Credit

Hi, I hope someone can help with some advice please.
My grandson is 17, has been offered an apprenticeship.
His mother has told him to leave.
He is currently staying with us, he's pretty much lived with us on and off his whole life.
I am disabled and we live in a one bed local authority flat, we claim universal credit , which pays part of the rent.  We have small private pensions, and I claim contribution based ESA and PIP.
My grandson will work for 32 hours a week at apprenticeship rate from the 1st Sept.
We have been offered a two bedroom flat in the private rental sector.
How will his wages be treated in our UC claim?

They are completely ignored, his working will have no effect on your claim.

[There will also be no non-dependant deduction from your UC because you are claiming PIP, if that includes the daily living component - but if not then there wouldn't be a deduction for him until he's 21 anyway.  https://www.entitledto.co.uk/help/non-dependants ]

There won’t be a non-dependant deduction for him, because of his age so it shouldn’t make any difference till he hits 21.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Even then, providing there's a daily living award of PIP there won't be any non dependant deductions.

Can the local authority not offer you a two bed flat?  Be very careful about swapping a secure local authority tenancy for a short term lease

Missed this part. You should check how much housing element you'll be entitled to because it's different to renting from social housing. For this you'll be entitled to the 2 bedroom rate of local housing allowance (LHA) Check here. https://lha-direct.voa.gov.uk/
The figure quoted will be weekly so you'll need to convert it to monthly.

  • Thank you all so much, yes poppy12345, I did check the LHA.  The private rental is my next door neighbours daughter, and she likes her tenants to be long term. She has several properties occupied by older people who have rented from her for over ten years, however after all your comments last night,  I e mailed our housing asscn, and will approach them as well, understand totally what you say sammyjammy, about security of tenure.
Once again, thank you all , we feel a lot lighter today xx
