Scottish power

About 7 years ago, I joined Scottish Power, this being one of the biggest mistakes of my life.  I signed up for direct debit on a duel fuel tariff, after 1 month I noticed that they weren't taking any money from my account so I called them up where I was told it would be taken the following month.  The following month nothing was taken, so I called them again, this went on for quite a few months and I eventually followed the complaints procedure and waited eight weeks and made a complaint to the Ombudsman. This took a few weeks and then eventually they started taking money by direct debit and by now I was in debt to Scottish Power due to the way they operate.  I agreed to make payments of £200 a month for duel fuel to cover the money owed.  This went on for a couple of years and then they stopped taking money out of my account again, so I chased them again and changed the Tarif as per their advice.  This went on for a few months and then payments were stopping again as they were trying to take more money than was actually in the account at one stage they were trying to take over £450 out of the account which of course wasn't in there.  This has been going on for quite some time and I have had continues calls to Scottish Power, I again went to the Ombudsman.  I am now over £4000 in debit to Scottish power, I am now paying £320 a month for gas and Electric, I live in a 3 bedroomed semi detached house.  I have been threatened with debt collectors and when the descision went their way, I was sniggered at on the phone.

I have contacted the Ombudsman with no joy:

Any advice would be appreciated.

Forget the monetary debits for a moment.  Have you ever given them a meter reading?  Have you ever had any bills?  If so, are those bills based on actual readings (that you, a meter reader or somebody else provided), or are they all estimates and the meter hasn't actually been looked at for nearly seven years?
