Car distance selling paying balance
Just a quick question before I pull the trigger on buying a car...
I'm buying at a distance with the car delivered, dealer is happy with a deposit and then pay the balance on delivery by bank transfer. Does this still count as distance selling, with the 2 week return period? Unfortunately he seems reluctant to take the deposit by credit card -says he doesn't have a card reader. Hmmm.
TIA

How are you paying the deposit? By debit card or bank transfer? If the former, he does have a card reader....If the world is a stage... I want better lighting!0

So long as all done remotely this will be CCR remote sale:

Simply say you can pay the deposit by credit card as that is the only way. Deposit can be a small amount.0 -
All done thanks. Paid the deposit by bank transfer in the end. Not ideal, but oh well.0

Yes it does. And it really is best for you to pay by credit card - both deposit AND balance - dealers often don't like this method as they have to pay themselves when customers use credit cards. But honest, reliable dealers will do it. I bought my car from a Toyota dealer, there was no quibble about paying by credit card. I wanted to do that because, as you know, I would have been protected by Section 75 if there had been a problem. Fortunately, there wasn't.
Please don't forget that there are hundreds of other car dealers out there who WILL accept your credit card payment. Honest and reliable ones too. I like to make sure I'm getting a car with a full service, full MOT, 12 month warranty, etc before I part with a penny. Or rather, before my credit card company does. Many of them will deliver free of charge as well so this dealer is nothing out of the ordinary.
Do the best thing for you, not this dealer. And it sounds as if you have some doubts. If in doubt, don't. Just look around again. It may be better to actually wait a bit and look around for a bargain in a couple of weeks, once the latest batch of brand new cars has been released.
You haven't committed yourself yet, and you don't have to either. That dealer is not the only fish in the sea of cars. Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. There only needs to be a nominal amount paid on CC for the full S75 protection to apply - what matters is the price of the goods, not how much of it was paid by CC/finance.
And it looks like the OP is already committed ... I guess their post wasn't there when you started composing your reply.Jenni x0 -

Distance selling has nothing to do with payment method, you could post him gold bullion to the value of the car, but if you enter into the contract remotely without any of it having been done face to face... this can be by phone, internet, zoom call etc but if you go inspect the car first and then switch to the telephone that isnt distance selling even though you were remote when you paid.1
