@Jenni_D His old machine is too small and battered I'm afraid. It’s beyond the pale tbh.

He’ll probably purchase the Acer Aspire 5 from Box.co.uk as suggested by @Cisco001 upthread;...it ticks all the boxes, and more.
We've never used Box.co.uk before;...anyone got experience of ‘Box’ ?
He'll also need an external DVD drive that will only be used infrequently. Any suggestions?

It would not be my choice. 220-Nit screen is poor. In fact the lowest brightness you can buy. i5 10th Gen is outdated and relatively low spec. The cheapest Kingston QLC NVMe SSD and lower end UHD integrated graphics. USB 3.1 Gen 1

250-Nit screen, a later and better specified CPU, a Western Digital TLC NVMe SSD and the superior Intel® Iris® Xe integrated graphics solution. USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type C™ port with DisplayPort.
BUT, it's missing the Ethernet port. Not an issue as you can buy a USB to Ethernet adapter if necessary. Example: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265045224228

No expert but does this 15” HP laptop tick enough boxes? On special offer from Costco: £379.98 and free delivery, IPS screen too.
I think?? you need to become a Costco member (£15 annual fee) to make an online purchase though.
Just a ‘money saving’ suggestion,___perhaps.

Good price for an entry level laptop. It even has a Touchscreen and a two year warranty.
Just not impressed with their build quality in general.

I've got an HP Envy gathering dust. I replaced it with an MSI which is more reliable.Dell is considered by many to be the better choice than Acer but both are better than HP.0
