Using unused day 8 pcr test as day 2 test

I recently travelled abroad but the covid test regulation upon return to the UK changed whilst I was abroad and therefore I no longer needed a day 8 test. Can I use this unused day 8 kit as a day 2 test for a future trip? The tests are probably exactly the same but they are packaged with different colours (day 2 is red and day 8 is green). They are from Randox.

    Probably not.

I see two problems.  You will have already registered the "kit" (both the Day 2 and Day 8 tests) as they appear to use the same registration number.  It's unclear if there's an expiration date on this but I'd be surprised if it will be active indefinitely.

The second would be the booking reference number you need to use on your passenger locator form is the same for both tests.  I'd not be comfortable using it twice.  If they're on the ball they will spot the same number being used twice which would undoubtedly cause problems.

If it were me I'd not want the worry of what would happen if the booking reference number being used twice gets flagged up ruining my trip, for the sake of £43.
  • Thank you ItsComingRome. You are certainly making much sense. However, the cost can amount to much more than £43 for a whole family. Also, the £43 is for a service, not for the actual physical material which must not cost much. So, as I have not used the service, it is unfair that I should have to pay for it.

It's not really unfair.  You bought a kit with a Day 2 and Day 8 test, you got that.  You could have sent the Day 8 test off if you wanted to get your money's worth I suppose but they appear to have upheld their end of the bargain.

If you'd tested positive on the Day 2 test you wouldn't need the Day 8 test either, but I wouldn't expect a refund there to be honest (or to get to use the Day 8 test later.)
