Do you tip hairdressers? Uber drivers? Bar staff?

  • I've no problems tipping extra to the car washer, not a job I would want to do.
I gave a pizza delivery guy £10 at Christmas because I wasn't up to cooking one evening and appreciated them bringing food and risking coming out during lockdown, and with it being the merry season, it was nice to see him made up.
When I can I find a fiver for the Big Issue seller on top of the magazine price.  Again not an easy situation for them.

Yes I always tip my barber. £1 to £2 depending on how much it costs.
Yes I usually give taxi/uber driver £1 to £2 for local rides.  £5 for an airport run.
Bar staff no.  But lots of places now add on a service charge of 10 to 12.5% so unless service has been bad I would normally pay it.
Restaurant staff yes usually 10% if service and food has been good.
Other trades such as car mechanic, plumber etc I may give a few quid if I think they've done a good job, offered advice, fit me in quickly etc.
  • Yes.

I tip my hairdresser - easily £5 every month and £10 or bottle of gin at christmas.

Taxi - Yes, its rare I take a cab, but I will always round up the bill.

Bar staff & Restaurants - Yup as if I do go out we tend to open a tab and between a few of us we leave a healthy tab for the kid who is working for minimum wage to get thru college.

My postie, hermes gets gin at christmas.

Binmen I give crates of beer as they split them all down before they knock off at christmas.

I do believe in tipping as it give people a boost needed, Plus the extra £5 from me could mean the difference of them walking home alone after shifts or getting a bus etc.

I had a friend who went from a taxi driver to a bus driver and he said the tips on the buses were really infrequent.

I can't say I've ever tipped a taxi driver, I tend to play by card now but always paid the exact amount when it was cash - or just waited for change. I do remember when I got the bus years and years ago it was a right faff waiting for change from the driver, but again I just waited.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

    You have misunderstood me.

I mean those extra tips given to someone working on a gig economy, could mean the difference between them walking home after a late shift on a night or catching the bus and getting home safe.

Having had friends who had rubbish jobs who have had walked home 4 miles at 1 in the morning instead of catching the night bus and getting home safe.

Lucky for you that you have buses that run that late. Pretty much no buses after 11pm our way

No one ever gave a tip to this ex-insurance broker!!!

Even when going above and beyond to help people.

    Me, bitter, never! 😉

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)

I tip my hairdresser as they do a great job.
Tip taxi drivers if they give good service (one who made disparaging comments about immigrants was given the exact fare)
Give my bin men sweets at Christmas, this year I also gave them cold cans of pop when the weather was hot. They do a great job and are always cheerful (but noisy!)
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

I don’t use a hairdresser, but I do use a regular beauty therapist and I do tip her usually a couple of quid. She did my makeup for my wedding (she came out of area on her day off) so I paid for her parking, gave her a hefty tip and bought her a bottle of wine and some chocolates. She did me a huge favour because I’m one of her regulars and have been since the beginning- I was really grateful as I would struggle to trust anyone else to do it due to my mental health problems.

I nearly always tip Uber drivers unless I’ve had a bad experience- level of tip depends on a few things- distance, helpfulness etc (like helping me load the car etc- some don’t bother) I also tip restaurant staff- I don’t tend to go to bars.

OH won’t allow me to tip the postie at Christmas- he’s a postal worker and he says the delivery staff get big enough bonuses!

TIP is more common in America.
Depends on the service received, most of the time just pay usual amount but restaurants include service charge which is fine especially when service is excellent.
