No longer possible to set basic HTML as default view in Gmail?

Hi,

As per thread title, I cannot see the 'set basic html as default view' option in Gmail any more:




I know its possible to get the basic view AFTER I've logged into standard view gmail as per instructions here

But I want the basic HTML view to be set as the default view.

So in the meantime, I've saved the following Gmail login URL in my browser but this only works about 80% of the time, ie Gmail still displays the 'standard' view occasionally when logging in using this URL:

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=h

Any suggestions?

Suspect they've changed it to default to Standard unless you're using a browser that doesn't support it.

You could probably use an extension, something like this for Firefox (something similar may exist for Chrome and Edge);

The idea being you come to the website and this extension tells Gmail you're ridiculously old and can't use standard view so Gmail says yeah not a problem, here's the basic version instead.  That's the theory.  I'm not sure how it works in practice for Gmail.
