If you are not sure, then get a suitably qualified electrician in to swap the fitting the for you.

    Photo of the new light?

What you have there is very normal. Perhaps watch some YouTube videos to understand what you have there: power in from the previous light, off to the switch and into the light, and also power on to the next light. Then a block of neutrals.

You can see the live (brown) and neutral (blue) going to the old light, which is where you need the new light, or you might be taking out those two black screws and wiring the lot into the new light.

    THIS!

Except when I've had my hand's on it! I prefer using a junction box above and just 3 wires comign down for nice simplicity. At least in the loft. I suppose on the ground floor it might mean having to lift the carpet and move the board again shoudl the junction box go wrong. Not that it would.

I prefer to do all the hard work at the switch - then you have a neutral at the switch (good for smart switches) and the wiring overhead is simplified. There are many equally valid ways to do it - I'm sure the OP will get there.

Definately if doing a rewire! I do hate in the light fitting though as the lights have seeem to have gopne all small again (nescesitating a bit of plastering since the old one covered all of the hole and the new one does not!) (and brick walls here so the route to the switch is not going to be touched!).

Remove the terminal block and connect the new L and N the same way the old L (brown) and N (blue)  are connected.
For L in this case it's the 'switched L' on the side of the rose (as compared to permanent L in the middle).
The old fitting didn't need earth. The new Earth wire goes to the Earth terminal of the rose.

  • The middle block of 3 browns is permanent live and you will need a 3-way wago terminal to connect them.

blue-sleeved-brown is switched live to the light, blue is neutral, green/yellows to earth. You might find it easier to wago them together too and use a short link wire to the earth terminal on the new light.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
