    Similar to amandacat. We decided to move into rental rather than lose our established chain after our vendor withdrew from sale. Couldn't find 6 month rental but were given lifeline by friend who offered elderly mum's furnished bungalow - miles away - as stopgap. It wasn't easy, moving twice & cost lots extra for storage etc but was worth it to complete sale of our 'marmite' home of 20 years.

    NO WAY would I contemplate doing it in order to keep existing house as an investment though.

    I'm a big fan of renting first, especially if you're not quite sure where you want to be, where work may be, or it's a new area for you. While there's some costs to renting, it's MUCH cheaper than buying the wrong house and having to sell/buy again. 

    The only thing to check is that there are rentals available in the area you're thinking of. And if you have pets, that there are any that are happy with pets. We relocated to a tourist area and there are very few rentals as any spare houses are run as more lucrative holiday lets, so finding one was a bit hairy. 

    Most landlords/agencies these days will want an initial 12-month contract. But by the time you've got settled, decide what and where you want, found a house and done the purchase process, 12 months easily passes. 

    When viewing, don't tell them it's definitely short term - may put them off renting to you, plus you never know, you may end up staying longer.
