Hey everyone, my dad brought to my attention that he spoke to someone at the council and he mentioned I was working part time and I paid my own rent I got tax credits at the time and I paid my own rent and council tax I didn't get housing benefit. The guy from the council said I should of been getting help.
So my question is am entitled to a refund for paying rent when I should of been getting housing benefit?

Unfortunately not i'm afraid. It's not your local authorities fault that you didn't know that there may have been help out there for you. If you now need help with your rent you will need to claim Universal Credit as it's no longer possible to claim housing benefit, unless you're living in either temporary or supported housing.

A claim for UC will also end any tax credits you may already be claiming. Before claiming UC you should use a benefits calcualtor to check entitlement.
