Golf Club Memberships

Since returning home to work from home since March 2020, i decided after 12 years to re-join a golf club. Last year i joined one club, but due to issues i have with walking on uneven ground, i joined another for year 2021 season. The issue i have is, after paying for full unrestricted membership, unless i can get someone to play with on any day of the week, i would end up playing on my own and unable to play in that day's competition. The way this particular club works, when you book a time via the widely used BRS App,, you would subsequently block that time for anyone else to join you, or vice-versa, you are unable to join any other group, even if the time slot isn't full (4 ball). Whereas at all other clubs, taking into account that they all use the BRS App., if there is a spare slot, and it is not booked to play out a match, you add your name to a spare slot in that time. I have approached the club committee about this, and they held a meeting and decided that they would not change the way of the booking system. I feel and have told the committee that i am paying a full unrestricted membership under sever restrictions, I have only managed to play in one weekend competition this year, being a drawn competition, and only because it was for the club championship. Is there anything i can do about this, apart from leave and put it down to experience, it just seems i have paid in excess of £600 towards a golf club for other members to benefit from it. Drew6956

Were these ways of working outlined in the terms and conditions when you signed for the membership?

When you joined the club you should have researched the way they operate. Never assume everything the the same is other clubs.

You can speak to other members, make friends and be part of a larger group. There are always friendly members who will include you when you are available and they have a spare slot.

Being a new member, not knowing anyone at first is nothing new but golf clubs are sociable places. Speak to the pro, he/she is a great place to get info on like minded people you can get in with.
  • Thanks for both comments, in regards to the T's & C's, i never really looked, as per Bris reply, i should have checked first and not just assumed. However, i have decided to join another club and on this occasion did research the process. I did make inquiries via the Pro shop to join other groups and the Committee of my present club, but that really fell on deaf ears. I had heared before i joined this club, that it is very select and it's always the same people playing at the same time week in week out, if one person fails to turn up, they never fill that slot, One of the weeks I played on my own as usual, the captain of the club was two holes behind on his own???

I guess people want to be able to book a game on their own or with less than 4 but not have another member tag along to their game?

Can you not book a slot of 2 and then ask any of the other members if they'd like to join you for that slot?

The two clubs I used to play in for competitions worked this way. if a slot was available anyone could join in, they were not allowed to lock it of unlike playing a normal round where you could go out with who ever you wanted.

It's pretty much common practice in competitions so it is a bit odd that the app locks you out.

I have never used an app though, it was a book at the entrance, you just looked through it for a spare slot that suited, wrote your name in and turned up on the day. Every one gets on well so never a problem really.

Does the club have any form of roll ups? Mine has several during the week.
