How long has probate taken for anyone recently please?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me how long probate has taken for them in recent months please. Was it a pretty straightfoward probate e.g. no property to sell just money from an account? My sister and I have a solicitor to do it for us and bit of a delay on our end getting it started, because we need to sign letters for the original will to be released and I've been away and sister had problems and busy. It is a 50/50 split and only money, no property or land to deal with because mum was in care and her property was sold. I read on here someone got probate done in 4 weeks, but it could take 6 to 8 weeks if no problems.

The solicitor applied for probate for my late Mum in March.  Four weeks with HMRC and three weeks with Probate.  Seven weeks in total.  There was property to sell (still ongoing) so I should think your case should be even quicker.

A week from submitting the online application to getting notified by e-mail that it had been approved - the actual grants arrived by post a few days later. this was in June.
There was property involved, although I don't think that whether there is property involved or not is really significant - what might make more of a different is if there is Inheritance Tax due or not (ours was well under the IHT threshold).

I think similar threads suggest that every case seems to be different and other people's experiences don't really give any guidance as to how long your particular case might take.

Hi we buying a probate house, probate has just been granted it took 6 weeks 2 day and the lady used a solicitor
  • Hi, we received the email from HMCTS on 1st July confirming they had received our documents.  The Grant was dated 9th August and the sealed office copies arrived in the post on the morning of 11th August.
Prior to 1st July there was IHT to pay.  It took 9.5 months prior to that due to a Deed of Renunciation being needed.  There's a property involved but it's a Transfer/Assent as opposed to a sale.
What we know is far, far less than what we don't know
  • We were one of the first to use the new on-line service without a solicitor and took about 6 weeks as I recall back end of last year. I was surprised by the process and the HMRC helpline was really good (the telephone helpline).

You already know this is a "how long is a piece of string" question, & the answers won't help you!

How quickly/slowly your solicitor works, which office is handing your probate, some probate work has been outsourced & is a mess, creating extensive delays & losing documents.

You can search here as often as you like for free https://www.gov.uk/search-will-probate so you'll see it there as soon as it's done, possibly before your solicitor notifies you.  Mine for my mother took less than 2 weeks, from submitting on-line to the grant dropping through the letterbox.  Below the IHT threshold which is the key to speed, that & no benefits which may raise questions that hold things up while additional info is supplied.

A few weeks, several months & anywhere in between I'm afraid.

Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.

Thank you for all the replies and saying how long it took and I realise it is different for everyone. It simply gives me a general idea of the time frame and it seems doing it online makes things quicker. 2 weeks was very fast SevenofNine and never heard of it being done with such efficiency and speed! As I said there isn't any property, land or shares and it is under the IHT threshold. It'll be a year since my mum passed away soon. When I registered her death I used the One tell service so her pension was dealt with and no benefits as my mum had been in care for awhile. The solicitor seems on the ball and the fault was ours not realising a letter needed signing and sending for the original will. Thanks once again for all your replies and it is never easy is it dealing with everything aftee a loved one passes.

Submitted by the solicitor at the end of April, IHT paid, house being transferred, simple estate, one beneficiary... still waiting.
  • We got an offer accepted on a house sold through an executor back in March. Emailed from solicitors etc implied that the probably should come within a matter of weeks. We're still waiting. Latest was - initial error uploading info at probate office created delays, then they came back with more questions creating more delays. Our mortgage offer is expiring soon. It's really frustrating.
