Co-op Credit Card with Apple Pay.

in Credit cards
I recently took out a Co-op Bank credit card. Did the usual activation routine, and I have used it a couple of times for small amounts just to check everything was working. I have not yet received my first monthly statement (although I would expect it anytime soon).
My co-op debit card is linked to Apple Pay, and I thought it would be a good idea to link the credit card as well - but when I tried to do so I got an error message in the Apple Pay app saying that I need to ring co-op bank and "activate the card for use with Apple Pay".
I have never had to do this with any other cards previously, and I really don't want to ring co-op at the moment (life's too short!). I suppose I am just wondering whether this is a new thing, or is it because it's a credit card not a debit card. Has anybody else had to do this?

Not unusual at all, although many providers also give you the alternative methods of verification such as email or SMS. I assume co-op bank have an email address and/or a mobile number on file for you? Otherwise you WILL have to call them in order to use Apple Pay.1

Banks are able to put whatever checks in place they want to stop someone accidentally finding a card on the street and then adding it to their phone therefore getting "unlimited" ability to spend without having to know the cards PIN etc. Most do this via text messages etc but the Coop have never been known for being cutting edge.
Never had a Coop card so dont know the answer but have you looked in the coop's banking app? I know if you go into the deep bowels of the Barclay's app you will find the "add to wallet" button for each card you hold with them (debit and credit)... Coop may have something similar and as you are in a verified state already potentially dont need to call them.1 -
I've had to do similar in the past with another provider, and last time I spoke to Co Op there wasn't much of a queue.
It was potentially quicker to call them than start this thread!1 -

I’ve had to call Co-op before to activate a card for Apple Pay, although that was a debit card I doubt their processes for credit cards would be very different.
TSB are another bank that seem to also often require a call, which is very irritating given that you often seem to struggle to get though to someone who can actually perform the activation process required! At one stage, I had to register for telephone banking before they would activate the card (and that was days later, as a newly-registered user is not allowed to immediately start using their security number in order to prevent fraud, which was fair enough but added a step to the process).0
