Is it possible to run up a £2000 bill on a prepayment meter ?

Hi - we have a rental property that we have recently taken back from the tennants who were there for around 10 years. It has a pre-payment meter for electric and gas in the house. We have quite a lot of letters for the previous tennants but by accident my wife opened the gas and electric bill addressed to them and it shows a debt owing of almost £2000 for electric used ? The gas was circa £6. My question is - how is it possible to run up such a large bill on a pre-payment meter ? The readings are correct. Regards

    Hi Slammeddeluxe,

It's hard to say what might explain this bill, especially on a prepayment, but this came to mind when I saw it: https://www.theguardian.com/money/2020/jan/14/pre-pay-meter-scottish-power-debt-bill-owe

Do ask the supplier to explain the bill to you and feel free to let us know if you manage to get a breakdown from the supplier.

Given this was a rental and the bills in the tenants name it is really none of the landlord's business to be asking about it at all.
I would strongly suggest they do nothing other than register a new account in their own name to cover the period before a new tenant arrives and avoid all involvement in the old debt...
