Shared ownership deferred rent

    So it sounds like it is possible for him to begin to pay the rent instead of deferring it, and he may be entitled to housing benefit which would help to cover said rent. 

    That said, this might unfortunately become a chicken and egg situation in that he cannot claim housing benefit until he can demonstrate that rent is being demanded, and the care company are reluctant to stop deferring the rent if they're (understandably) not confident he can meet the rental payment without the benefit.

    Do you know if interest is being added to the deferred rent?

    Another potential spanner in the works (speaking from the point of view of a former Welfare Rights worker- albeit towel now hung up) is that he may encounter a 'contrived tenancy' issue if he tries to claim HB (on the basis that his rent liabilty has been set up to take advantage of the HB scheme). It's a grey area and would probably be worth challenging if HB was refused (on the basis that he is liable for rent, albeit currently deferred) but if he goes down that path I think he should be aware of the possibilty of things not being straightforward.
