Home Insurance and Building Work

Hello,

I'm looking for anyone with experience of the scenario below. How did you approach this and was it the cheapest option?

We are planning to start an extension in the next 6 months and our home insurance is coming up for renewal. Our planning permission will not be finalised until a week after the insurance renewal and we cannot get our technical plans (and therefore formal quotes and builder starting dates) until planning is approved. We have been told that planning shouldn't be an issue as we are making minimal changes to the exterior and none of our neighbours have objected. Do we wait until we have a definite start date and then notify our insurance company (and pay the extra charges) or is there a separate type of insurance that you can take out when the building work starts? I have got quotes from compare the market, ticking the yes building work is ongoing box puts the insurance up by £150-200.

Has anyone got experience of doing anything similar and did you need a separate insurance or did you just take it out early? I don't want to end up taking out extra insurance unnecessarily and am not really sure what I should do!

TIA for any advice :)

Well the cheapest option would be to not tell your insurer. If your house falls down, you'd be claiming against your builders' indemnity insurance in the first case anyway.

The alternative is to just tick the box at renewal - you'll pay the extra couple of hundred, but avoid the admin charge of adding later. You'll also be choosing the insurer who gives you the best price including the building work - you might find the one you otherwise chose is cheaper without, but doesn't turn out to be the best deal when the building work extra is included.
  • Hi
We had significant building work a few years ago & we had to move out so they wouldn't cover us for contents etc.
We moved back in before everything was totally finished and they wouldn't cover us for accidental damage whilst we still had tradesman on site.
