Have you tried turning the tablet off, then back on again? (Sorry if you already tried that.)

I wonder if the internal storage's filesystem is corrupt.

Are you sure you're reading the storage figures right?  If 6Gb of free space isn't enough something's wrong somewhere.  An app from the Play Store shouldn't be taking up any more than 500Mb at the absolute most (complicated/top end games will take up space, but something less complicated will take much less, probably less than half, of that figure, possibly less than 50Mb).

The actual figures shown in Settings/Storage are 9.97 GB out of 73.66 used.

Expanding this tab then  breaks it into Internal shared storage 9.95 GB used of 16.00 GB  and SD Card 52.06 Mb used out of 57.66 GB.

This is a new SD card bought specifically to try to get rid of the storage issue.  I previously used a 16GB card and that had the same issue so I thought I might as well try a different one.

Looking at the installed apps, it looks like all the "big" ones are Google apps.  ie, Google Play services 643 MB,  Google 456MB,  Chrome 245 MB, Gboard(?) 153 MB,   Maps 120MB,  Photos 120MB etc.  That's after clearing all caches.  So nothing too big or strange looking?

I've rebooted the tablet every time I've changed or removed anything.  The numbers for used storage go down when I uninstall apps and/or clear caches so it recognises that something is happening!
