Velux - Double or Triple glazing?

Would I be right in thinking that opting for triple glazing in our 1340 x 1600 velux kitchen window would be a waste of time and money when our bifolds are only double glazed?

Also, would I be right in thinking the EDT flashing kit would be correct for Marley Modern interlocking concrete roof tiles?

We have double glazed.  When it snowed in the winter, we couldn't see a thing for days!
We have a triple glazed flat roof light and it didn't perform hugely better.  Both were impressive.

We also get condensation on the outside of the windows of a winter's morning, so I think they're actually pretty great.

There's some logic in having additional insulation value where heat is most likely to escape (through the roof), but after one winter, I'm still happy with our choice.

I opted for sliding doors over bi-folds, however, as there are less thermal breaks, amongst other reasons.

It wouldn't be a waste of time. It would reduce the heat loss and your bills. It would, of course, cost more.

Given the reduction triple glazing gives to the U value, and you know the area of the window and you can guess the average temperature difference between the inside and outside when you have your heating on, how much of the year you have your heating on, and the cost of energy to heat your home, you can back-of-envelope calculate the bill saving as a result of triple glazing the window.

I went for double glazed too on my velux windows. For me a few pounds of reduced heating each year didn't justify a few hundred pounds of triple glazing.

There is also a insulation collar, which provides a better insulated seal, which is worth considering.

Rather than triple glazing to minimally reduce heat loss through the window, I think the insulation collar to reduce heat loss around the window sounds like a good move, so I went for it and double glazed.

The U-value impact of triple glazing is well documented, but I haven't seen any proper information about what difference the insulation collar makes.

Unlike Doozer, I went for bifolds because they look cool and are fun to open.

That sounds like a nice afternoon tea! Perhaps I'm in the wrong business.

  • Hi Bally.
We went for 'triple' on the bifolds in our recent extension. Why? Three reasons - (1) the bifolds take up most of the largest external wall so we reckoned the small improvement might make a 'difference', (2) it'll sound good when we come to sell (cynical, huh?), and the third (and prob the most important) is - it only cost £195 extra on a £10k+ total glazing bill (bifolds, sky lanterns, windows, door). A no-brainer.
Would we have done ditto for a single 1.3 x 1.6 Velux? Not unless it was only £30 more...

  • Thanks All.

Our bifolds are already ordered and manufactured so too late to upgrade those to triple glazed.

Triple glazed on the velux adds about £110 to the cost. I think I'll stick to double and spend that £110 on the contents of the wine fridge.

  • Good call - and 'cheers'.
We wouldn't have gone triple on our Bi's had it be notably more costly.
