Has your Chip account unexpectedly changed to ChipX?

I checked for the expected £1.50 charge of mine and my wife's Chip+1 accounts today to find that we've both been charged £3.
On investigation it seems that we've both been changed to the ChipX account despite neither of us intentionally doing so.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Ask them in the live chat.  They automatically upgraded everyone to ChipX on a free trial, where you had to downgrade back if you didnt want to keep it.

Its a bit odd if you ask me.  I dont know any other financial institution that would upgrade your account(and fees) without authorisation.

Yes I agree putting customers automatically into a higher priced product that may be less suitable doesn't sound right. I would be asking for a refund of the difference.

Yes, we've asked to be reverted and refunded.

Chip responded to both mine and my wife's chat in the app and say the accounts will revert back to Chip+1 and they've already refunded us both the £1.50. There was no comment on how it occurred - we've been avoiding the promotions they've been having for ChipX.
  • Does anyone know the legal standpoint on this? I've just received an email saying they haven't been able to take my chipx membership fee. When I contracted them to advise them of the error, as I didn't believe I had a chipx account they just said I did nad have had for a while signposting me to the account description. I've only ever opened a fee free savings account with them. In all the aggressive marketing before the launch of chipx I didn't read an email that gave me a free trial to the investment platform (a completely different service to the savings account I signed up to) and making the consumer opt out to avoid payment. I have never consented to a fee based account with them, haven't agreed to any terms and conditions of using the chipx service and have never used it. How can they have charged people without their consent?

Just had an email "You missed your ChipX membership fee... "payment method not active". I went for the initially high interest rate but thought I'd severed all connection about a year ago, but still get "How we can help you..." type emails. A rather dodgy sounding organisation!
