Storage insurance.

I have to put some items into storage for up to 1 year. I’m told I need to insure the items. I currently do not have home contents insurance.

Any advice greatly received?

Thanking you.

If you dont have home contents insurance why are you bothered about storage contents insurance?

Can't the storage facility suggest an insurer.  I've just looked at the website for one storage company and they offer insurance.

Yes, I thought generally this was a commonplace money-making scam additional protection they offered (even if you're storing a load of bulky old tat which you don't really want to insure).

In fairness to the one site I looked on, they say they can provide insurance through a single insurer, but it is up the the renter to decide how to proceed.  It doesn't say you must take their insurance.
  • don't take the storage place's insurance, it is extortionate for what it is. Better run a price comparison and cover both for like £50 a year.  Be sure to contact the insurer of your choice before finalising the insurance contract, because most need to add a specific endorsement to express that items in storage are also covered.

But do they require you to have insurance at all?

I've only looked at a couple and they do both require that you have insurance.  One does seem to try to make it difficult to get your own as they have a long list of requirements which must match, or better, their offering.
  • I used Surewise in the end. £100(12 months) for £10000 cover. Lot cheaper than the inhouse insurance offered over same period
