Goodness me, how did that app cause you stress?
the hassle of trying to setup the initial transfer, the need to phone the call centre to close an account that can supposedly be so easily opened via the app... I could go on but i'm done with Tandem and this thread.
it's fine if you have the time to play with your 45 apps, but that's not for me.

It's clearly impossible to change your mind, but it is equally impossible for you to convince me that setting up an initial transfer to Tandem is in any way any more stressful than setting up an initial transfer to any other account. If anything, it's less stressful if you use the pull method as you can't get your Tandem account details wrong.

I agree, closing should be possible online. This is also a function sadly lacking for many other savings accounts at all sorts of providers. But if it stressed me out to make a call about it, I'd simply empty the account and not bother with closing it. It's not as if anyone could nick any money from you or impact your creditworthiness in any way if you have a dormant savings account.

Lastly, and that's my final comment on this matter: I don't "play" with 45 apps. They all have a useful purpose for me. The only reason I mentioned I have 45 banking apps was to indicate that I have experience with a wide range of banking apps and can easily compare their functionality/complexity/design/usability etc etc.

I wasn't aware that I was even trying to convince you that you were wrong - you are seemingly using it without issue, so if it works for you, then i'm happy for you. :)
the point of replying to the OP was because they asked for experiences of Tandem... I had just had one and so conveyed what had happened and my thoughts... which I stand by.
you do realise that our opinions of Tandem can both be correct - they're not mutually exclusive... the fact that you find it hassle-free, doesn't necessarily mean that others will.. similarly, there will be things that I find easy to do, that others, including you, might struggle with... that's life and different experiences... i've been in IT for 30+ years, so i'm not a neanderthal!
i've opened many savings accounts - nearly all of them were simple and hassle-free, one had a bit of necessary faffing about... the only one that I found an absolute pain was Tandem, but I don't think that is a unique opinion of them (and neither is yours).
as I said, for a fixed rate, I might have persevered, but for the difference of about a tenner in interest (max) from where the £9k ended up, i've got better things to do... perhaps if I was using a tablet/phone combination, it might have been easier, but not for a tenner on an easy access account.

I don't want dormant accounts lying around that I could forget about - and credit worthiness is never going to be a concern for me.
my big mistake was not trusting my own instincts about Tandem and being swayed by posts like yours recommending them - never again to either.

don't get so het up on the use of the word "play" lol.
it was the 45 figure that blew my mind - I don't think i've used that many banks/financial in my entire life, let alone today.
  • I started to set up a savings account in Tandem and then I got their request to link to my current account and have access to my balance and transactions. I have never come across such an intrusive request and stopped. Anybody else had the same experience? Or did you find a way round it?

This is normal with Open Banking

It can feel a bit strange at first, but it's the way banking will go. Tandem will use your current account as part of their ID verification, and you can't avoid this initial verification if you want to use Tandem. The authorisation you give them to read your account is temporary, and all they can see is the snapshot at authorisation time. For subsequent deposits, you have a choice. You can either pull money into Tandem, giving them another temporary authorisation, or you can make your deposits the "dinosaur" way, i.e. by Faster Payment from your previously authorised current account.

I quite like the pull-in, as it saves me faffing about with yet another payee on my current account. I have also come to the conclusion that I don't care if Tandem can glance at my current account now an then. YMMV.
  • I was same as @colsten at first, as @colsten may recall, however, I am now comfortable with it and link Tandem to several of my accounts via Open Banking for ease of transfer withdrawals.
  • For Lloyds, I have a transaction limit of £5000 for pulling money in to Tandem via open banking, vs £25k via faster payment. Can it be increased? Can't find any info at Lloyds.
