I used the service offered by the Post Office.  It involves everything, including taking an acceptable photo.  Very, very simple.
Good to see you posting @PompeyPete. I've missed your posts about your many and varied holidays but I suppose you've been grounded like all of us. ☹️

Is that service in person at main Post Offices? 🤔

Hi maman.  I used the 'Digital Check & Send' service that the Post Office offer.  Other than take in my old passport, provide an email and postal address, and pay for the service, that was it.  No queue at the counter when I went in, and took less 5 minutes.

My last trip abroad was a couple of easy weeks on the Riviera Maya in Mexico just before Covid kicked-off.  Too much potential hassle and possible disappointment at the moment, so just enjoying beautiful UK, and treated myself to a season ticket at Morecambe FC. :)

Thanks @PompeyPete. I've checked which branches locally offer the service so all set to use it towards the end of the year when I'll have 6 months left.
  • I’m applying to renew my passport online. If applying  on paper form you need to send with it 2 photos. Do I only need one photo to down load for online application ?

A couple of years ago a friend tried using the Post Office checked system and still had the application returned as she hadn't signed the application.  What's the point of using the PO system if they don't check something that basic?
