Wickes vs Howdens vs Premdoor

Need 10 internal doors - white 4 panel primed.

Wickes sell them for £34 inc for their own brand

Gibbs & Dandy is £39.60 for Premdoor

Howdenns don't list a price

For Howdens I would have to create an account but I will only do that if they are in the similar price bracket as Wickes and Gibbs & Dandy

So how do these doors stack up in terms of quality?

I can't comment on the others but I recently fitted some Premdor moulded ladder style which probably have the same or very similar internal frame and I'm very happy with them. They are what they are and do a job. The main problem with this type of door is if you need to trim them beyond the 5mm per side allowed e.g. if your door frame is out of square.

They're going to be much of a muchness, but they are the bottom end of the scale as far as quality goes.  I always check the weight of the door as that is what gives the impression of quality when they are hung.

Howdens door is cheaper for me.  Weighs 10.77kg. Wickes door weighs 11.77kg and I can't find details on the Premdor.

I pick heavier doors than that.  The labour to fit will cost more than the door.

What doors up from that do you recommend / fit.

On 10 doors I am being quoted £50 each to fit which includes the latches, hinges and handles.

One point that I need to decide on is the amount that needs to be shaved from the bottom and top. Currently the carpets have been ripped out and its just floorboards and I would rather have the doors as close to the height they need to be now rather than having to remove them and then plane them down again after the carpet goes in.

The Premdor come with a 10yr warranty and the Wickes 1 year - not sure if that means much?

I prefer a door with a fire rating.

I'm not really sure what's going to go wrong with a door that would warrant a claim on a warranty.  Warping?  But they'll be made of something stable.

At our last house we had premdoor as our door sizes were odd inc 2 fairly narrow airing cupboard ones and the size range they did meant we could have exact fits and have to say they were well made and looked good.

They do hundreds of different door sizes.   The cheapest ones will not have much leeway on them at all, so it's definitely best to work out the exact sizes needed before committing to a door that can't be trimmed to where its needed.

  • I went with Leaders Doors (Liberty); 5 of the 8 glazed doors have been fitted and I still have 2 more unglazed to order. The doors are good although I can't say I'm thrilled with the CS.

    Massive supply problems...?

No, the supply chain was fine. They were mean with their discount - believe me they do exist, but you're not going to get one by calling up the CS line, you'll be lucky if the phone is actually picked up - and they don't waste any chance to slap on ridiculous delivery charges. Having said that the overall prices and products were right, so this is where I got my flooring from too - albeit delivered to the wrong address!
