Have gas prices really gone up this much?
I am with EDF on a two year fixed plan which commenced in March 2020. I just thought I'd look around to see if I'm likely to get a cheaper deal when the tariff ends next year, and I got a bit of a shock.
Currently I am paying 2.068p per kWh for gas. The best "big supplier" tariff currently available for me is EON at 4.512p per kWh - that's more than doubled!
Electricity is not much better 13.7p to 20.7p !
The standing charges seem down by a few pence day but this is insignificant in the scheme of things.
Have prices really gone up this much in 18 months?! And I hear there are more price rises on the way

Just over 2 pence is unusually cheap and you have another winter at that price. If there's a mild winter in the northern hemisphere gas prices might come down substantially from present levels before you have to renew.0

Yes, prices have gone up considerably. There are however "big supplier" tariffs under 4p for gas and under 20p for electricity.A very quick example, not intended as a recommendation - EON Next are offering me 2.44p sorry, typo, 3.44p and 18.83p respectively.N. E.on Next are cheaper for most people direct, will still be much higher than two year tariff you took out March 2020 https://www.eonnext.com/My region E SC 24.39 18.31 kwh Gas SC 26.60p 3.31p kwh - 2 year fixed no exit fees0 -
I've just done a quick comparison and none of the gas prices were anywhere near to 4.5p. Which PCW were you using?0

Octopus Energy Gas is 4.5p+kwh ( Whisker away from October new cap level) via at least 1 comparison site, EON Next Exclusive via comparison sites has much lower SC, Gas kwh rate as per O/P

I only looked at the first 20 or so results. I don't understand how one at 4.5p came at the top for the op.0

Better Smart 13 August 2021 (4.662p / 20.654p)If switching now it seems I'd be better off ignoring the comparison sites and just letting my current deal lapse. For example EDF's "deemed" tariff or EON Energyplan standard variable both have rates of 3.337p and 19.001p for me in Eastern region. How can these be so much better than what the switching sites are touting?

I'm guessing the op is a low user as that E.ON Next tariff has low standing charges so would be at the top based on that.0

https://energy.guylipman.com/sm/gastrackerCompare the wholesale price today with what it was 6 months ago.0

Best to start with Citizens Advice and 'Which? Switch'. They show all suppliers by default, whereas the others usually default to showing only the expensive suppliers that pay them commission. But as @stewie_griffin says, you may have low usage which can justify a high standing charge.jamei305 said:stewie_griffin said:I've just done a quick comparison and none of the gas prices were anywhere near to 4.5p.
