Training course cancelled during notice period

Hi everyone,

I gave my notice period and during this period I was going to attend to three training courses (not a qualification). These courses were agreed and paid.
My boss told me he was going to cancel these courses because they are intended for people that will give value to the company in the future and blah, blah, blah.
I see his point, but I would like to attend to these courses since it is the first training that the company has provided in more than three years.
I am not going to argue with him about this, but I would like to know if he has the right to cancel these courses, or if I should be treated as a normal employee until my very last day.

Many thanks in advance,
Joe

I agree with your boss, what's in it for your employer to send you?
Thank you for the reply. As I said, I see the point, I just want to know if he has the right to do that.
  • i take it the courses were paid by the company so yes they have a right to cancel them.

Yes.  He has the right to cancel your attendance at the course and ask you to spend your notice period working at whatever is appropriate for you to do rather than attend the training course.  He is managing you.

You didn't ask about this but, giving the necessary notice, he would also have the right to tell you to take any holiday you will have accrued up to the time of the termination of your employment if you would otherwise be paid for it.  He doesn't have to do that - and in fact if you had holiday booked during your notice period, he could cancel that too by giving you sufficient notice.

Thank you for the answer and the extra information.

Just another voice to say yes - the boss has every right to cancel the training course if you're leaving the company. As much as it's your first training in 3 years - the cost paid by the company was an investment in your future. If you're not going to be working there any longer, then there's no need to pay for the courses.

As above, I can't see any grounds whatsoever for a company to invest in something that won't provide value.

It sounds like you want to go on this course, nothing wrong with that. Just do it through your own means.

I would suggest the OP is only 'a normal employee' until they handed in their notice.  After that day they became a 'leaving employee' so there is absolutely no reason for the employer to invest in training them either internally or externally.

I was absolutely gob-smacked to attend an external training course not long ago and find one of my colleagues there, who was working their notice.

You could offer to pay the cost of the training yourself, and take leave those days?

It may have been a case that the course was paid for and nobody else was available to attend.  It also gets that person away from the office with their possibly negative attitudes.
