No road tax fine

So I bought a van from Evans Halshaw in 2018 I always taxed it and insured it. Evans Halshaw didn’t send off the info to dvla to let them know the new owners details. I always paid tax and insurance 6 monthly on credit card. Last year I decided to pay on monthly direct debit, when the direct debit was due to renew it didn’t because it didn’t know where to send the reminder. I got a yellow sticker on my van to say no tax, I paid it immediately and the missing tax. Roll on 6 weeks I have sent off the green slip and received my V5, couple weeks later i received an offer from dvla for out of court settlement £432. Has this happened to anyone else ? I have contacted Evans Halshaw but not feeling hopeful.

Do you know they didn't send it off?
Maybe they did, but it got lost or a DVLA !!!!!!-up. It's been without tax for 3 years, perhaps the fault lies with you for not being aware?

You bought a van in 2018, never received a V5C for it... and never bothered to chase it up?

Without a V5C doc ref, and without V11 reminders, how did you pay for the tax by card and by DD...? Using the V5C/2 yellow slip every time...?

This isn't down to EH. This is down to you. You should have chased DVLA after a month or so.
  • Ah ok so it’s been taxed it just lapsed, as someone who hasn’t bought a vehicle before I wasn’t aware that it is my responsibility to get the V5. Thanks for the info.

It's the vendor's responsibility to change keepership.

But if that goes awry, they have no way of knowing - but you know that you haven't received a V5C... So, yes, it's your responsibility to get onto it.

OP, they don't send out reminders for direct debit payments (unless it's different for vans versus cars). Mine has just rolled on for the last few years. They do send me an email telling me what the payment schedule is for the next 12 months, but not had anything else.

Each to their own but I much prefer to deal with such matters online. It is usually far quicker than a face to face or phone discussion.

I pay my vehicle tax (that is what the DVLA call it) via annual direct debit. I get an email notification a few weeks before it is due so all I need to do is make sure the funds are there in my bank account to cover it.

With direct debit there is no risk of me forgetting to pay it and receiving a hefty fine.

I don't need hard copy as I have a soft copy of everything in my email folder.

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I find that the easiest way to remind myself when it needs to be renewed, is to check online. It will tell you when your tax and MOT isdue.

You can even check your neighbours.
