I used to use one similar to this and pump it to give a blowing and sucking action on the offending blockage - less than a tenner from my local plumber's merchant.

I can confirm that blocking the sink and plunging the toilet has worked
Just a tip for anyone who does the same...the first time I tried it, the rubber plug flew out and hit me on the back of the head so make sure you secure the plugI used a wee bit of gorilla tape over the top and it worked for me!!
Other half has been suitably warned about how to dispose of kitchen towel when cleaning from now on1 -

This happened at my son's rental just as they moving out, ran out of toilet roll and thought kitchen roll would do. Turned out that waste pipe had collapsed due to roots and the kitchen roll got snagged on the roots.0
