Thanks everyone, will give some of the suggestions a go after work and see how I get on :)
A good suggestion to cover the sink plug and overflow at the same time as plungering. If you struggle to get a seal on the sink then as an alternative, fill the sink with water to just below the overflow. Flush the loo or pour a bucket down it, pull the plug on the sink, wait 5 secs then plunger the loo - the weight of the water going down the sink waste will hopefully prevent the air from coming out this way.

I used to use one similar to this and pump it to give a blowing and sucking action on the offending blockage - less than a tenner from my local plumber's merchant.

  • Thanks everyone!!

I can confirm that blocking the sink and plunging the toilet has worked

Just a tip for anyone who does the same...the first time I tried it, the rubber plug flew out and hit me on the back of the head so make sure you secure the plug  I used a wee bit of gorilla tape over the top and it worked for me!!

Other half has been suitably warned about how to dispose of kitchen towel when cleaning from now on

Great - let's just hope the whole street doesn't get blocked in a few days time!  :D

This happened at my son's rental just as they moving out, ran out of toilet roll and thought kitchen roll would do. Turned out that waste pipe had collapsed due to roots and the kitchen roll got snagged on the roots.

I find boiling water and lots of it can often speed up the softening of inappropriately flushed items
