Buying a van - tax issue

Options
Afternoon,

I'm buying a van this afternoon, tax ran out last month, got an MOT. Obviously I'll be taxing it as I need to drive it back. Surely though the car will still be registered to the man I'm buying it off, so when it's registered to me he'll get the money back?
Am I missing something here, never bought privately before!

Thank you.

  • As soon as the DVLA receives notification of a change of Registered Keeper the tax is cancelled. The previous owner will receive a refund for all unexpired complete months left to run. The new owner has to tax it from the first of the month in which he acquires it. So he will pay for August and so will you.

You can fill out the change of keeper online and then tax it online, so the previous keeper won't get any refund or bill

You tax it online, using the slip from the back of the V5. This has an extra digit that signifies a change of keeper. You also tick the box for "I am the new keeper" and supply your name & address.

Then it is immediately registered and taxed in your name.
