Roaming charges are a total ripoff. The marginal cost per minute or per MB to Vodafone PLC is exactly the same (ie virtually zero) whether I'm using my Vodafone UK sim on the Vodafone UK network or the Vodafone Greece (for example) network.

The only reason the networks get away with 10000000000000% margins on roaming fees is because people have been conditioned, based I can only suppose on memories of pre-1990s nationalised landline networks, to believe that international telephony is somehow costly to the providers.

There have been some resellers like this, but after years of good roaming arrangements in Europe there wasn't much point so most have disappeared, and the ones still around tend to be rather more expensive than getting a local SIM card when you arrive.

Decent roaming hasn't completely ended. Some main networks have made announcements, but so far none of the virtual brands that use them.

For starting from scratch now, for mainly calls and texts, I'd suggest find an O2 Classic payg SIM on eBay, with the 3p a minute calls and 2p texts.

For mainly data, maybe a local SIM when you get there, or modest bundles on UK brands that aren't introducing daily roaming fees.
