Something like this happened to me, went to pick up a car, had a balance to pay to the dealer, put my card through the Dealer's PDQ machine and it came back as Declined - printed it out as Declined as well.

Had obtained a balance from a hole in the wall machine that morning so I definitely had the money in my account, so phoned my bank while at the dealership, the bank said they had authorised the transaction??

Anyways the salesman got their accounts dept. to phone the Card Handler who then checked their systems, after quite a while they came back with - "whoops we don't know how it happened but yes the bank authorised the transaction but somehow our systems have reported it as declined though we're not sure why, but its okay you can let the customer take the car and it'll get sorted" (that's not verbatim obviously).

Altogether it took well over an hour to sort. Unfortunately I can't see that the post office clerk would have had that sort of time available away from other customers to sort anything out.

You should have taken the advice to keep trying by card - by paying cash you have separated the two transactions.
